Their Usefulness
After their rough first few stages within the hospitals women were able to prove their usefulness and competence to their male counterparts
- Women began to gain more responsibility and respect in their positions as they grew used to the conditions of the battlefield
- The female nurses were willing to do the seemingly unimportant jobs that the men thought they were too good for
- They maintained the patients hygiene and maintained special diets for them
- Without the female nurses doing these jobs, the death rate would have been much higher
- The Catholic nuns were a very helpful group of women in the hospitals because they had such strong religious fortitude
